“Every year, about 42.5 million American adults (or 18.2 percent of the total adult population in the United States) suffers from some mental illness, enduring conditions such as depression, bipolar disorder or schizophrenia, statistics reveal.”
The mysterious and tragic police fatal shooting of a mentally ill father of a 10-month-old child, Marcelo Luna, 47, took place on August 19, 2016, in East Hollywood, Los Angeles. Marcelo Luna suffered from schizophrenia and bipolar disorder although most of the time he enjoyed living a normal life. Luna had a girlfriend with whom he had been dating for two years and the couple had the 10-month-old child together. Sometimes illness and depression took him over but still he loved his life and was harmless for people around.
The day Marcelo Luna was shot dead by LAPD police officers his mental disorder aggravated. He had an argument with his girlfriend, Roxana Villalobos, because of his desire to take his self-made “bayonet” with him outside. Luna had no intention to hurt anyone, “I just want to feel safe. I just want to feel safe”, he said.
LAPD Police Officers received a report of a man vandalizing vehicles. When they came at the scene they saw Marcelo Luna with “bayonet-style weapon” and shot him dead. The LAPD fails to comment on what led to the fatal shooting. Their vehicle was equipped with a dashboard camera and according to the video posted by the Los Angeles citizen journalist officers were wearing activated body cameras which they ditched right after the shooting.
That’s why we demand the dashboard and body cameras footages to be publically released as soon as possible. The family of Marcelo Luna deserves to know what happened to him when he met the LAPD police officers. Mental illness is not a crime but killing an innocent father is.
LAPD Police Officers should not be allowed to hide or destroy evidence. Sigh this petition if you want the footage of Marcelo Luna shooting to be released and investigated.
